Uig is remote community spread across the west coast of Lewis and Bernera is an island connected to Lewis by a road-bridge, together they support a population of approx. 600.
The Uig & Bernera Development Group are made up of nine volunteers from across the two communities. The group meet monthly with the Local Development Officer to progress local projects.
CURRENT PROJECTS:
- Community Purchase of Uig Shop
- Hebridean Connections
- Care Needs Assessment
- Land Use & Housing Survey
Uig and Bernera were not a recognised single community prior to the Initiative at the Edge but they have demonstrated that they can work very well together. Although it is not a single community spirit that has been created the cooperation between the two communities seems to have boosted confidence. There are not many large infrastructural issues yet to be addressed as CNES recently included the Kirkibost pontoons in their capital programme for 2004. The group plan to carry out an extensive housing survey using some of the Development Plan fund in order that they can assess the housing demand.
Uig and Bernera will exit the Initiate at the Edge on the 30th of September 04 and then enter the follow up phase
Further Information regarding the follow up process for Uig and Bernera will be available in due course.
