Jura, one of the Inner Hebrides Islands within Argyll and Bute , is approximately 30 miles long and 5 miles wide. The Island is located approximately 190 miles from Glasgow with a combined journey time of seven and a half hours by road and ferry crossing. Jura has the added disadvantage of being two ferry journeys away from the mainland. A return ferry journey from Islay to the mainland costs £120.40 for a family of four travelling by car. An additional amount of £19.20 must be added to the same journey for the return ferry crossing from Jura to Islay . A return journey from Islay to Glasgow by air costs approximately £318 for a family of four.
Both Argyll and Bute Council and Argyll and The Island Enterprise have recognised Jura as one of the remotest Argyll Islands and have designated it as an economically fragile island community within their respective economic strategies.
Craighouse is the main village in Jura with the remaining households spread out across the island. Jura only has one public road, namely a single track road which is approximately 30 miles long. Access to the remaining households is via tracks and private paths.
