Community Purchase of Uig Shop

Timsgarry Shop & Filling Station

Community Proposal to Buy Uig Shop

Timsgarry Filling Station is a lifeline service for the Uig community as it houses the main local post office and sells domestic & motor fuel as well as being the only grocery store within 25 miles.  In June 2003 the shop was put up for sale and there was concern in the community that there was a possibility they could lose the facility

Therefore Uig Develoment Trust was formed to look into the possibility of taking over the shop & running it as a community enterprise and in December 2003 the Trust was successful in gaining a £56,250 grant from the Scottish Land Fund and a £14,063 grant from the Community Land Unit towards the cost of acquiring the property.  The shop is now owned by Uig Development Trust who lease the facility to the Uig Community Co-operative.

The community co-operative run & manage the business through a team of four staff.  The business premises has been refurbished and there is now a wide selction of stock available.  As the business develops its links with the Scottish Co-Op network (CWS) their choice of stock will further improve and they will be able to start a pre-order and delivery service in the area.
