  • The shores of Loch Sunart on the west coast of Scotland contain some of the most extensive oakwoods in the country, rich in biodiversity and highly valued by local people for generations.
  • The woodlands are now the focus of a broad-based partnership working to restore and expand them - the Sunart Oakwoods Initiative
  • This work is bringing new employment to communities, enriching wildlife habitats and improving access to the forests so that people can experience a unique closeness to nature and wildlife unrivalled in Europ
  • The Sunart project has highlighted the partnership approach of agency and community groups.
  • This approach in Sunart has included groups from outwith the Iomairt aig an Oir area but this has proved not to be a problem in delivering the overall benefits of the project.

  •   A recent visit by professional foresters - The Royal Scottish Foresters Society drew favourable responses. During the keynote speech at the Society dinner held in Fort William on 19th May the director described the work going on in Sunart as "cutting edge stuff".
