Sanday

The Orkney island of Sanday
The island of Sanday is the largest of the North Isles of Orkney. As its name suggests, its most outstanding features are the sweeping bays with their white sandy beaches. The island, with some five hundred and fifty inhabitants, lies nearly twenty-five miles north-east of Kirkwall and is itself about sixteen miles long.
Sanday is a delightful place to live.

It offers tranquillity; a quiet place that demands you linger in order to savour its gentle charm. You can fish for trout in lochs, or idly beachcomb along deserted beaches. You can visit archaeological sites, or observe seals basking on the rocks offshore. As regards wildlife, Sanday offers unlimited opportunities for both the specialist and the amateur. You can watch fishing boats at Kettletoft, or farmers tending their fields in the long, light days of summer.
The island has an excellent junior high school, with an adjoining fitness suite, swimming pool and Community Centre, which are hetically busy all year round catering for the islanders’ interests and activities. In summer children and adults can participate in games and pastimes during the day at the Centre, or perhaps attend a dance in the evening. Sanday has a range of bed and breakfast and self-catering facilities, and two licensed pubs. In all of them you will find a warm welcome.

Despite all the benefits, Sanday faces some considerable challenges – for example, young people leaving the island, not enough well-paid work, over burdened facilities. Working together through various organizations, including the Sanday Development Trust, the Sanday Community Council and the Sanday Community Association, the Sanday community is determined to ensure the island and all its residents face a sustainable future and the very best quality of life.
