Care Needs Assessment

Uig & Bernera- Care Needs Assessment

An assessment of the care needs of older people in the Uig & Bernera area has recently been carried out.  Every individual over 60 resident in the area was interviewed for their opinions and ideas on current service provision and possible future initiatives.

Key issues arisng form the report included:

  • 80% of Uig respondents wanted to see a permanent GP based in the area
  • An overwhelming demand for some form of 24 hour care to be provided in both communitites
  • A need to develop some form of local handy-man service to assist elderly people living on their own
  • Potential for developing social opportunities in the area for the over 60 age group

It is hoped that some of the issues that emerged from the assessment work will form the basis of a bid to the Better Neighbourhood Services Fund - Westside Pathfinder.

Land Use & Housing Survey

In order to find out more about the key issues of crofting and housing at a local level some of the Uig & Bernera Development Groups funding has been channelled into a door to door survey.  The survey aims to establish what challenges people are facing in living in the community, what they would like to see happening and what changes they are willing to make to current practices.

The survey is being put together with assistance from the Crofters Commission and Tigh Innse Gall the local housing association.
